# REL's SURE-Torque Module
REL has enhanced the abilities of the [SURE-Test Systems Platform](https://www.relinc.com/split-hopkinson-bar-kolsky-bars/sure-test-systems/). A new module, SURE-Torque, is a torsion module that has been developed to obtain shear properties of materials at high strain rates.High strain rate shear properties are important for engineers designing products subject to high energy events. Many engineers estimate shear properties from tension and compression tests, while others have derived creatively shaped samples to test shear properties with a compression SHPB setup. REL uses a hex shape on the ends of the bars and broached impedance matched couplings to apply the torsional loads to samples. See the machined and prepared samples and couplings below.
## REL SURE-Torque Samples
To load a sample directly (and only) in shear, a torsion module was designed. This module required a total redesign of the loading mechanism.A servo motor was attached to a planetary gear box to develop enough torque to twist a 3/4” diameter bar is installed on the end of the incident bar. A clamp is used to hold the bar during the twisting of the bar to a predetermined torque (up to 600 ft-lbs). The clamp is then released suddenly to send a shear wave down the incident bar.
For calculations and testing, it should be noted that shear waves have a slower velocity and shorter wavelength than longitudinal waves of the same frequency. Typical shear wave velocity in steel is approximately **3250 meters per second (0.128 inch per microsecond).** Longitudinal waves travel the fastest of the wave modes, approximately **5900 meters per second (0.23 inches per micro-second) in steel.**
Once the wave reaches the end of incident bar, it impacts the sample. Much like conventional compression or tension SHPB testing, part of the wave travels through the sample into the transmission bar and part is reflected back into the incident bar.
Shear strain gages mounted on each of the bars capture the event. A high-speed camera is needed to visually measure the sample strain. Sure-Pulse 1.14 has been updated to perform the shear data processing and torsion digital image correlation (DIC). A sample DIC with strain tracking video is below.

# REL’s SHPB System New Bar End Conditioner Module
In the case of S [plit Hopkinson Pressure Bar](https://www.relinc.com/split-hopkinson-bar-kolsky-bars/split-hopkinson-bar/) (SHPB) testing, violent impacts are common. Oftentimes a material experiences deformation and loading and failure in a total in 50 micro-seconds (0.000050 seconds). This sudden exceeding of a materials strength is a result of an impact generated through an impact of a striker bar traveling at up to 150 ft/sec (over 100mph). The striker suddenly stopped by impacting an incident bar, sends a stress pulse through the incident bar to the material sample being tested. A part of the energy is transmitted through the sample to the transmission bar and some is reflected off of the sample. Strain gages mounted on the system capture this dynamic event and through data processing (often in a program like SURE-Pulse), the user can determine the material’s behavior at a given strain rate. The need for evaluating properties at increased strain rates increases the severity of these bar/sample collisions.These impacts that take various sample materials past their strength limits eventually wear on the system’s high strength maraging steel bars. Insuring that bars ends are flat and free of damage is critical to obtain consistent, high integrity material property data. Newly manufactured bars are ground to precise flatness, but if hard materials are tested at extreme rates (strain rates up to 104), damage can occur. Until now, this issue has been mitigated by ‘impedance matched’ bar end inserts and sending bars in for regrinding once damaged. Another option is now available…

# REL's Part Cleaning Equipment
## Part Cleaning for Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection
Many newly fabricated components and refurbishment of components require a process capable of prepping a part’s surfaces for inspection (i.e. FPI), repair and/or subsequent coatings. This cleaning and/or surface treatment is vital for each of the subsequent processes these components must go through.REL’s [automated iFPI equipment](https://www.relinc.com/custom-equipment/ifpi-equipment/) is often accompanied by a surface treatment stations. In many instances, a cleaning line is a dedicated piece of equipment. REL designs and builds automated cleaning lines that are capable of consistently and efficiently cleaning baskets full of parts. This week the below large cleaning system is being installed at our customer’s site.
The 10 tanks of this system are designed for a part envelop of 6’ long x 5.5’ wide x 5 deep’. A basket filled with part(s) (to be cleaned and etched) is handled by an overhead traversing system, which picks the basket up at the beginning of the line and ‘carries’ it from station to station.
Each tank is equipped with a powered lowerator (1000lb capacity) that accepts the baskets and dips them for a predetermined cycle. The fluid in the tanks is agitated to enhance fluid flow over the part surfaces to insure consistent part cleaning.
The system is controlled and monitored through intuitive HMI’s mounted on the front of several of the stations. Recipes are a stored in the PLC and can be selected with each basket. This insures process consistency from basket to basket.
REL’s cleaning and surface treatment (CaST) equipment basic operating procedure is as follows.
1. Operator selects recipe on HMI by load station.
2. Operator hits process start button on HMI
3. Machine takes basket and conveys it to the far end to start the process to maximize throughput. The size of the maximum part envelope does not allow for the crossing of basket paths when the elevators are in the up position. Steam heat with immersed coils will heat the process tanks. The lowerators will be electrically driven up and down. The eductors in the tank will be driven from a magnetic drive pump to eliminate seal issues in the permanganate tanks.
4. Upon recipe completion the basket will index to the load/unload station to be removed from the line. If the station is occupied the HMI will alert the operator that the system is trying to unload a basket.
5. A system process clock will alert the operator to the time remaining until completion of all baskets in process in real time. This allows the operator to have visibility into what stage the line is in with each basket in the system.
When the system is not in use, garage door type covers are powered into position to minimized fluid loss to the environment and to help maintain fluid temperature.
More details of the system are below: **Hot Water Rinse Tank**
- The hot water rinse tank includes heaters to heat rinse water to predetermined temperature (i.e. 180°F). The tank is heated by a submerged steam coil and controlled by a modulating steam valve from the PLC.
- The tank includes a lowerator system to raise and lower the baskets into and out of the tank. No moving parts, guides, or wear items associated with the lowerator are installed inside the tanks.
- The drive is fully column supported on the outside of the tank to ensure that rolling/wear elements are not wetted by the tank contents. (See Figure above).
- The tank includes eductor agitation to ensure proper chemical solution mixture. The eductor is driven with a 5HP magnetic drive pump through nozzles located in the tank. This pump is mounted at floor level.
- The tanks are fully insulated with closed cell polyurethane foam (R value of 7 per inch). The ventilation will be a push pull design in accordance with ACGIH. Two separate high static blowers are used (4 tanks per blower) to provide the ‘push’ air.
**Alkaline Tanks**
The system includes two tanks for use with J-84AL alkaline solution.
- These tanks include the same eductor agitation, insulation, lowerator and ventilation features as the rinse tank.
- The tanks heat the solution to 190°-200°F and sustain that temperature by a submerged steam coil and controlled by a modulating steam valve from the PLC.
**Acid Descaler Tanks**
The system includes two tanks for use with J-3 acid descaler.
- These tanks include the same eductor agitation, insulation, lowerator, ventilation and heating features as the alkaline tanks.
**Rinse Tanks**
The system includes one rinse tank for the alkaline solution and one rinse tank for the acid descaler.
- Fresh water circulating through the tank with the eductor agitation to ensure proper removal of all residual chemicals.
- A stainless steel gutter shall collect all any overflow and direct it back into the tank.
**Permanganate Tanks**
The system includes two tanks for use with J88L permanganate.
- These tanks include the same eductor agitation, insulation, lowerator and ventilation features as the rinse tank.
**Permanganate Rinse Tank**
The system includes one rinse tank for permanganate.
- These tanks include the same eductor agitation, insulation, lowerator and ventilation features as the rinse tank.
- Operator shall be able to select either to rinse with fresh water or with a solution of 0.25-0.5% of Nortex heated to 150°-170°F.
- A stainless steel gutter shall collect all any overflow and direct it back into the tank.

# Expanding Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (Kolsky Bar) System Capabilities to Perform Impact Testing
REL’s latest system demonstrates that converting our Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (Kolsky Bar) to an Impact Tester is a seamless transition. In fact, many of the pieces required for impact or drop testing are already in place.The below videos are of the same event from both sides. One with an iPhone in slow motion mode 250 frames/second and the other with a Shimadzu HPV-X2 high speed camera at 10000 frames/second. A striker of a set mass is launched at the desired speed to obtain a set impact energy. A high-speed piezoelectric load cell is mounted on the stop stand to measure the transmitted load and Point Tracking with the high speed camera in conjunction with DIC in REL’s SURE Pulse to monitor the deflection during the event are used to plot the load-displacement curve of the impact event. ## Impact Testing Videos
The required modules to perform an impact test or drop test are as follows:
1. Launching system – Same as SHPB
2. Striker mass accelerated at a set rate – Several lengths included with SHPB and more exact masses of various materials can be easily manufactured.
3. Speed Sensor to know exact energy upon impact – Same as SHPB
4. Load cell on Stop Stand or transmission bar to determine transmitted load. – Stop from SHPB now includes a high speed piezoelectric load cell
5. Camera or measuring system to track the impact event – up to 10000 frames per second is sufficient.
Tailored speed impacts from 10 to 150 feet/second are easily obtained with various weight striker bars. An available striker stop system insures single hit events.
The advantages of this system over typical drop test systems are:
1. Wider range and flexibility of energy that can be put into an impact event.
2. Easier Single impact events as the mass is moving horizontally.
3. Lower Cost system – more so if you already have SURE-Test System or SHPB System.
4. Safe, Enclosed impact chambers
5. Impact testing modules reside on the same SURE-Flat platform, and often can be set up simultaneously with a SHPB test setup efficiently uses lab space.

# New SURE-Pulse Software Release
## High Strain Rate Testing Software
REL is excited to release another free new version of its high strain rate testing software SURE-Pulse to the high strain rate testing community.We encourage you to download and install the latest version found at [https://www.relinc.com/software/](https://www.relinc.com/software/).
Features included in this release include
- Improved in SURE-Pulse filtering

**Data filtering:** REL’s method is too avoid the use of filters unless absolutely necessary, and if used they are used only in post-processing of results, not during testing. That being stated, there are times when high frequency noise is present in the final graphs and could be eliminated. These SURE-pulse filters have been improved as to not lose pertinent material information while applying a filter.
The new filtering method uses a triangular window, with much better performance than the previous filter, which was prone to ringing artifacts.
**DIC Updates:** The video output while performing Digital Image Correlation (DIC) now defaults to Eulerian strain, which produces a strain map that follows the sample as it deforms.

SURE-Pulse helps maintains REL’s leadership in the high strain rate testing world, by providing an open source, user-friendly analysis software. REL’s new Profusion X modular lighting offers ‘sun-like’ brightness for a variety of applications.REL’s Profusion X Modules are an expandable lighting system designed for tailorable lighting. Multiple modules can be ‘linked’ together to achieve a focused high intensity light configured for high speed imaging (up to 5 million frames per second) at a continuous duty cycle. The output is dimmable from 0-100% to accommodate any exposure, sample reflectivity or lens configurations. Profusion X Modules include input and output triggers, which can be used to connect to camera and testing systems to coordinate your testing event.
Also, if one is looking to light up the side of a building at night from 350 yards away, The tightly focused Profusion X with 4 degree beam angle (4-Beam) light is the answer.
The elegantly designed light modules are engineered with 7-high power LED emitters emanating light through high performance lenses. The lens mounting plate allows for focusing of the light at adjustable distances. Modules can be mounted on freestanding tripods or paired with any camera mounting system. The high intensity, continuous light source, combined with the inherent expandability and focusing, ensures quick setups and consistent image acquisition. # REL Designs, Builds, and Ships Mini-SHPB – July 19, 2017
Built on the same expandable, modular platform all GEN-3 SURE-Test SHPB systems sit, REL designed and manufactured a miniature compression Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar system. This mini-system is currently setup with 1/8” (3mm) diameter x 32” (812mm) long bars with a momentum trap, but it can be scaled up or down very easily. The architecture is open to allow for the integration of all REL’s standard add on SURE-Test modules. (REL’s Camera and high intensity lighting is demonstrated in the image below).
A scaling down of SURE-Launch was needed to propel 1/8” diameter striker bars at reasonable speeds. This manually fired launcher will propel the system’s striker bars 120 fps at 50 psi. While this does not sound dramatic, controllable and consistent strain rates of over 12000/s have been achieved on aluminum specimens.This system integrates a 2-channel SURE-DAQ, a full acquisition system, and all data is processed through REL’s SURE-Pulse free open-source software.
One-eighth inch diameter bars offer some challenges in SHPB testing. One of the challenges is mounting the strain gages. A microscope is used to mount and check the dynamic 3mm gauges to the bars as seen below.
Bar alignment is achieved through REL’s unique bird-mouthed bar supports locked onto the keyed SURE-Flat base. The alignment of the 1/8” diameter bars is insured when the bushings bottom out into precision-machined bar supports. This feature allows for efficient interchanging of bars (i.e. steel to aluminum) for different tests.
This single rail platform also integrates a workstation shelf where the data acquisition system and computer reside. This shelf was widened in this system to allow the system operator to layout specimens to be tested, striker bars and run all data processing after testing.
High strain rates are more easily achieved in smaller diameter samples. These samples are conveniently test with this system. Researchers testing multi-layered materials, where quantification of the each of the layers is needed, will see great advantages to using this robust mini system.Call REL for more information on our latest innovation. REL continues to refine and develop dynamic testing modules around the SURE-TEST Systems Brand with the launch of a new high intensity light. This lighting module builds off the success of REL's SURE-Bright family of focused high intensity LED lights. This product is 'aimed' at illuminating dynamic events from multiple directions effectively improving high speed imaging and improving 3D DIC on impacted structures and test specimens. **Features:**

# 3 New Features showcased on REL’s SURE-Test Systems
REL’s two recent shipments of SURE-Test systems showcased new features to enhance the flexibility of their high strain rate material test platform.SURE-Flat Wire Management adds the flexibility to be running multiple tests using various modules at the same time. Connection points for air, power, and sensors are available along the length of the system without long wires to tangle or fight with when moving between modules. Tensile SHPB and quasi-static test could be set up coincidentally and REL’s system mounted acquisition station can be slid into position and connected to easily accessible utility ports. REL’s flexible acquisition station was upgraded with addition of an electronic shelf for mounting a litany of electronic components used for the capture, processing and reporting of testing events. SHPB tensile testing involves the use of a grip setter to press grips into the material being tested. This grip settle module was reengineered in a cleaner package to mount anywhere on the SURE-Flat base. # REL’s C4 Magnum GLO-Black LED UV Light lives up to its name
September 23, 2016
The toughest black lights in the industry, REL’s C4 Magnum GloBlack LED UV Lights, have undergone another round of vigorous testing. The question is constantly asked, “How tough is it?” The REL test engineers dialed it up a notch in this case. It was decided that a C4 Magnum GloBlack Light would be shot with the equivalent energy of a .45 ACP round! The test was conducted at REL’s firing range where the events are captured with high-speed video. REL’s range has a fixed gas launcher with a 20’ barrel for propelling projectiles up to 3000 ft./sec. A 1” diameter 230 grain round of nylon was constructed and launched at a velocity of 1090 feet per second. Check out the video to see what happened... You will agree that this light is tough!

# REL Ships 3rd Generation SURE-Test System
REL’s Gen-3 system has taken what has been learned from the previous SURE-Test System platforms and has optimized the usability, the repeatability and the safety of the testing system. Gen-3 is designed for better structural performance. The overall mass and stiffness of the system has been increased with thick wall steel box section tubing and laser cut base platforms for a rigid connection of the modular sections. The Gen-3 Sure-Test platform is designed to be modular in nature. This flexibility allows the system to be configured in different sizes, lengths and to integrate different testing modules. These variations give the system the ability to conduct a wide variety of test configurations in addition to classic SHPB testing. Some of these configurations include: dynamic bend, dynamic burst, quasi-static tension/compression, medium rate tension/compression, direct impact, momentum transfer, dynamic hardness, thin film strength and acceleration testing. In addition to the modular flexibility, the Gen-3 system retains a common set of precision interface features regardless of the option configurations. This allows the equipment operator to easily modify the specific setup of the machine quickly and efficiently while maintaining the precise alignment of individual components required for repeatable dynamic test events. These features include a common ground surface plate deck with integrated t-slots for work holding and a precision alignment key for locating components accurately with no special alignment procedure. The system also includes a linear rail system designed to mount and align accessory modules that are required to travel along the system length. These modules include hardware such as data acquisition (DAQ) workstations, environmental chambers and high-speed imaging and lighting equipment. The Sure-Test System design has seen extensive use and validation in REL’s high strain rate test and development laboratory as well as in installations on various academic, military and commercial sites. The safety of REL’s system is improved through the remote firing of the SURE-Launch system. The firing control and wiring can be taken into an adjoining room to initiate a test. Locking out of the system can be easily completed through the disconnecting and locking up of the firing control in a location outside of the lab. This will insure that no un-trained users can operate the SURE-Launch Module.
**Technical Specification:** The detailed specifications for a typical system is as follows:
_**Sure-Test Platform Base Equipment**_ • Three 10ft Sure-Flat Base Sections. These sections combine for a total of 30ft of double-wide mounting rails compatible with all Sure-Test system modules. • Automated 1” Launcher assembly. This launcher allows striker bar diameters up to 1” diameter. Standard pressure units operate up to 300psi and launch striker bar projectiles up to 300 ft./sec. High velocity units are also available. • Fifteen bar supports capable of carrying up to 1” diameter bars. These supports are 6” center height • A hydraulic damper with stop stand designed to absorb excess energy from SHPB and dynamic impact test events. The stop stand also serves as a mounting base for load cells, sample platens and fixtures. • A SURE-Speed chronograph module. The SURE-Speed is a highly accurate, compact chronograph designed for SHPB use. It records the striker speeds for dynamic testing and is easily configured with a keyed mounting base, adjustable height carrier and intuitive touch screen.
**_Tension Modules & Bar Sets_** • Two sets of tension grips and collets built to REL’s latest specification for system bars. REL will also supply the setting tool required for installing a sample in these grips. o These grips and collets have been developed and tested to provide a consistent and predicable dynamic response through the testing event. o The setting tool supplied is used to set the grips into the sample at specified pressures. This issues consistent load response from test-test.
**_SURE–Servo Module_** • A servo mechanical test system module for testing samples at low to medium strain rates. A typical system has a gear reduction option that will generate up to 5000lb push/pull up 6 in/sec. In direct drive it will generate 500lb push/pull up to 60 in/sec. The servo module mounts to the SURE-Flat base system and is compatible with all bar end grips, caps and samples from the SHPB hardware. o The grips used in the SHPB testing are compatible with the servo mechanical test system to be able to obtain both quasi-static and high strain rate properties of materials.
**_Data Acquisition and Analysis_** • A rail mounted workbench and drawer cabinet. This unit will attach to the accessory rail on the Sure-Flat system and roll to any position along the length of the system. It is typically used to mount computers, signal conditioners, oscilloscopes and store tools, samples and cables. • Revolutionary Processing Software – SURE Pulse is an open-source software that continues to be refined to not only produce SHPB testing results, but also process data from all generic load, strain date users may generate. The latest features in SURE-Pulse integrate image data captured by high-speed cameras. Using digital image correlation SURE-pulse plots strain information directly on the processed sample images. This allows the stress-strain curve to be compared to the actual visual state of the material that the curve represents. The results file is portable and can allow for analysis to be shared across different users. The steps taken to transform the data are preserved, allowing back-tracing of test data. REL supplies unsurpassed service after the sale with years of testing results and know how that we use to insure our customers can test with confidence immediately on their new turnkey system. Over two dozen of REL’s SURE Test Systems can now be found at various universities, research institutes, and companies on 5 continents.

# REL launches GLO-BLACK Magnum UV-A Black Light
REL launched their latest technology product to the NDT industry with the GLO-BLACK Magnum UV-A black light. Typical Black lights are designed for ‘clean environments’ where inspectors use these lights in Dark Rooms to illuminate indications on critical components in the automotive and aerospace industries.
"There are times when every tool gets brought to an environment that it wasn’t designed for: Screwdrivers used for pry bars and punches, vise grips used as adjustable wrenches, and pipe wrenches for hammers. Like the aforementioned tools, the REL GLO-Black Magnum was designed to perform in adverse situations in real industrial environments. This light has been submerged, dropped, scorched, frozen, kicked and beaten. The GLO-Black Magnum performed flawlessly in these tests and still maintained its aura, or ‘GLO'. “ says Josh Loukus, REL’s President.
The final test is shown in the video below in which the light was driven over with a fork lift! REL is not sure why one would drive over a beautiful piece of hardware like the GLO-Black Magnum but REL's test engineers thought that it was important to perform this compression test as well.. under the tire of an 8000 lb forklift!

The Practicalization of SHPB testing was developed over the years to build understanding of critical variables in the Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) testing of materials. We all have said and heard statements like, ‘The strain gage needs to be mounted perfectly’, ‘The test was run at a strain rate of 1500’, ‘Make sure you lubricate your bars to minimize friction’, and on and on. Getting started in the lab we hear these things and never fully understand them. This presentation was developed by a bunch of novice test engineers to aid the reader in startup, test understanding, testing possibility, and to put some brackets around what can be found from the test results that are produced. REL will be presenting on the practicalities of high strain rate testing at the annual Society for Experimental Mechanics (SEM) International Congress June 6 – 8 in Orlando, Florida.
There are several parameters that researchers performing SHPB testing are aware of to eliminate error and variance in their testing. REL has taken this list of variables and isolated the effects during high strain rate compression testing of metals. This overview extends into Tension and 3-point bend testing. Setups will be discussed and evaluated.
In addition to giving an informative talk, we will showcase our latest addition to the SURE-TEST Systems family. REL’s adjustable new lighting system with multi-length focus and our updated SURE- Pulse software with Digital images Correlation (DIC) will both be demonstrated at the show.

REL, Inc. is exhibiting our latest Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection (FPI) technology at the MRO America show in Dallas, Texas on April 5-7, 2016. In addition to presenting our SMART iFPI systems, REL is introducing the GLO-BLACK UV LIGHT which utilizes the latest in high output LED ultraviolet (UV) technology. This black light has sleek, lightweight design to maximize operator safety and inspection maneuverability. The emitter contains 4 high flux-UV LEDs and has a built-in electrostatic discharge protection circuit, which is engineered especially for reliable operation in electrostatic spray environments. The GLO-BLACK UV LIGHT provides a large 6-inch diameter coverage area at 15 inches away at intensity above 3000µW/cm2. An 115V wall adapter is supplied but this light can be powered from any 20-56V DC power source. The engineered finned body housing is made of aircraft alloy aluminum. This allows for ‘cool’ operation and on-the-job toughness.

Also included in SURE-PulseTM 1.9.3 is an integrated image processing tool. The image processing tool uses digital image correlation and target tracking on a series of images to calculate strain. The strain data and the images are seamlessly integrated into the processor and viewer.

REL has officially launched an updated version of the Matrix Brakes website. The new site allows for easier browsing and purchasing, product ratings and reviews, enhanced mobile compatibility, abandoned cart recovery, user accounts, and much more.
One of the major feature additions is a "Build Your Rotor" function (pictured below) that allows users to see how their rotor will look as different options are selected on the page. REL hopes that this feature will aid users in creating a rotor that matches their unique style and taste.

# REL ships out automated FPI line to repeat customer
January 8, 2016
The most photographed piece of equipment in the history of REL left the premises this week. "Gone are the days where we don’t have enough ‘swag’ or pictures for our website," said Josh, President of REL. This FPI line was run off in-house for our customer and extensively tested and photographed during the process. This images and video are now available on our site here.
This FPI Equipment is being delivered to the same customer that saw huge gains in productivity and over 90% savings in penetrant usage in a system they purchased a year ago. This shipment also marks the beginning of REL’s “S” branding campaign. Watch for next week’s news story on the launch of “S” branded equipment.

# REL Releases Open Source High Strain Rate Testing Software

REL is releasing its SURE-Pulse software suite under the GNU General Public License, version 3.0 (GPL-3.0).
SURE-Pulse was originally written to be a high throughput testing software to handle REL’s in-house high strain rate testing with their Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar system. Due to its cross platform, non-proprietary and open source nature, REL hopes that SURE-Pulse will become the standard method of calculating test analysis in high strain rate testing. REL is seeking engagement in the SURE-Pulse project from the academic community to standardize and increase transparency of high strain rate calculations.
The software integrates data processing, data analysis, and image processing into a single software suite. It is built to be compatible with a wide variety of data formats to maximize compatibility with other data acquisition systems. Though the software was built to handle high strain rate testing, it has the ability to process any material testing result. The software is written to minimize the work needed to add new sample configurations and calculations.
Current data processing features include low-pass filtering, automatic pulse selection, and saved test configurations. The image correlation package includes a simple interface to run the C++ version of Ncorr (http://ncorr.com). The data viewer package includes useful data visualization for overlaying multiple sample result curves, and a tool visualize how video analysis corresponds with sample data. The software uses portable workspaces, which can be shared between different users. This should allow easy sharing of results.
REL is encouraging the community to suggest and collaborate on new feature adds to the SURE-Pulse software suite. There is already a variety of features that are planned to be added to the suite including Pochhammer-Chree dispersion, two and three wave stress analysis, Young’s Modulus correction, feature tracking in sample, and seamless integration with the PicoScope oscilloscope API.

# SURE-Test: momentum transfer study
REL ideated and manufactured a high strain rate three point bend fixture for controlled rate testing. The deformation rates were performed up to 800 inches per second utilizing our in house SURE-TEST System in the momentum transfer configuration. We were able to produce the aforementioned deformation rates with no addition equipment other than the sample holding fixtures. The SURE-Test system is highly configurable, and streamlines the development of new tests. The system assures a precise linear alignment of testing equipment capable of imparting and measuring load at a wide variety of speeds. Producing constant velocity during these tests with 1" of total deformation was a challenge and was accomplished by tuning viscoelastic pulse shapers. The deformation rate curves showed less than 10% deviation over the desired deformation range. A high speed video shot on our Kirana 05-m shows a test being performed on a steel alloy.

# Throwback Thursday - “the Snatcher”
For Throwback Thursday, REL looks back to 1999 and the beginning of building material handling equipment.
A company came to us with the problem of trying to remove pipes with a 32” diameter, 50’ long, half-full of sand, and weighing approximately five tons. They wanted to be able to resell the pipes as either a reusable product or as scrap. The sand that was in the pipes had to stay on the inside of the dam.
When other methods were tried, it was too costly with low production. It was taking three workers and a crane to do 3 to 7 pieces of pipe in an 8 hour shift. The workers had to crawl into the pipe and shovel the sand out in order to save the pipes and keep the sand in the dam.
With REL’s custom designed and manufactured system, nicknamed “the Snatcher”, 11 miles of pipe were removed in one week and hauled to the loading area with only 2 workers and the sand stayed in the dam! All the pipes were salvaged and resold. “the Snatcher” was mounted on a 245 Catapiller excavator.
This was the start of our equipment build era.

# SSLF Model FPI system showcased at ASNT
REL showcased their new **SSLF Model FPI system** at the ASNT conference in Salt Lake City, Utah on October 26th.
REL specializes in automating Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection (FPI) systems. This non-destructive testing process was developed in the early 1900’s to find surface flaws in train wheels. Years ago the fluid was a light-weight oil and the powder was flour. Today, industry uses chemicals specially designed with low surface tensions and fluoresce under specific wavelength light. The principle of the process is to:
1\. Apply a penetrating fluid (oil or water based) to the part surface.
2\. Allow time (dwell) for the fluid to spread all over the surface.
3\. Wash off the excess fluid.
4\. Blot the fluid to the surface (if any) by the use of a powder.
This is the only approved process required for finding surface cracks/flaws in non-ferrous parts. All parts in vehicles that fly go through this process when they are manufactured as well as when they are reworked.
The design of the **SSLF Model FPI** was inspired by the job shop work REL performed for a local company that developed and sold single station parts washers. This compact, efficient, and robust unit was the icon in REL’s Booth 1041 at the ASNT show where we met FPI processing leaders from around the globe. This truly unique package allows for the integration of all of ASTM 1417 process steps (‘the Bible’ for FPI processing) in a compact footprint. The SSLF is the latest offering in the line of Repeatable Exact Logical (REL) processing equipment. Features built into the SSLF Model FPI include:
1\. PLC one - touch control
2\. Easy CAL - gage calibration, and
3\. Power Turn - for ergonomic operator access
During the show, REL heard the comments, “WOW! I didn’t realize the process could be so compact, ” and “Great job containing a messy process in a single booth.”

REL has just completed the installation of a new aluminum low pressure casting press. This will expand REL’s capabilities in advanced casting techniques. The casting cell will initially be used for the casting of REL developed high pressure internally structured [natural gas tanks](https://www.relinc.com/advanced-materials/conformable-natural-gas-tank/), and will also play a key role in the demonstration of our [TRABO™ Spray](https://www.relinc.com/advanced-materials/trabo-spray/). REL has squeeze casting, high-pressure die-casting, and now this new low-pressure casting capability.

REL will be exhibiting at the American Society of Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Show this year on October 26-28 in Salt Lake City, Utah. REL specializes in the design and manufacture of Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection (FPI) processing systems. Matrix Brakes has continued developing their revolutionary lightweight metal matrix composite (MMC) brakes and soon will be delivering “Matrix Brakes Colors”. This development builds on the industry leading technology already present in Matrix Brakes. Conventional technologies boast ‘lightweight’, ‘long lasting’ or ‘warp resistant’; but the only truly lightweight brakes with a lifetime warranty are made in the Matrix Brakes facility in Calumet, Michigan.

# REL/MTU/SWN CNG Tank Project Update
REL, Inc. and Michigan Technological University (MTU) were awarded a $2.1-million, three-year investment from Southwestern Energy Company (SWN) of Houston, Texas. The project resulting from REL’s research and subsequent development of the Matrix Tank in ARPA-E's MOVE Program, charges an interdisciplinary team of REL engineers and Michigan Tech researchers with designing, fabricating and testing a conformable, compressed natural gas tank for use in light-duty trucks.
The Quarterly Status Review included progress reports from the engineers at MTU who are charged with tank integration and modeling and materials optimization. REL, who has taken the lead in the development and manufacturing of the high pressure CNG storage tank, showcased their most recent developments in both their innovative casting technologies and in-house tank testing areas.
Highlights from the REL report included reaching the critical burst pressure milestone of the Matrix Tank, a demonstration of the field addition casting cell, and most notably, the first CNG leak check of the Matrix Tank in REL’s Burst Pressure Chamber. (picture below) The new Burst Pressure Chamber was completely engineered, designed, and built by REL to expedite in-house testing of the REL’s and 3rd Party CNG tanks. The Matrix Tank, developed by REL, is being integrated onto a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado. The two-phase project has advanced ahead of schedule and has already achieved a significant milestone as a prototype tank has been modeled, designed and fitted to the underside of the test vehicle.

Currently the fourth largest producer of natural gas in the US Lower 48, Southwestern Energy Company is a growing independent energy company primarily engaged in natural gas and crude oil exploration, development and production.
